TAWAU: Police are investigating a viral video showing a pedestrian being hit by a car while crossing the road at Mile 3, Jalan Apas, here, on Tuesday.

Tawau District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said the probe was initiated following a report from a male complainant at the Traffic Complaint Counter of the Tawau District Police Headquarters (IPD) at 3pm regarding the clip, which has garnered 88,000 views.

He said initial investigations revealed the vehicle involved was a Proton Persona driven by a 55-year-old local with three passengers, travelling from Ranggu towards Tawau town, while the pedestrian was believed to have been crossing from the left side of the road to the right prior when the incident happened.

The driver was travelling in the right lane and could not avoid the crash due to the short distance, he said.

Following the incident, the driver immediately took the pedestrian to Tawau Hospital.

Jasmin said the pedestrian was identified as a 58-year-old foreigner, currently reported to be in stable condition and still receiving treatment at the hospital.

The case is being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving, he added.
