TAWAU: One person died while five others were injured, including three in critical condition, after a Perodua Alza crashed into a lorry parked at the roadside along Mile 8, Jalan Luasong, here, on Friday.

Tawau Police Chief, ACP Jasmin Hussin said the deceased was the 14-year-old son of the Alza driver, 48, who was among the critically injured in the 2pm incident. They include a male friend, 43, and his daughter, while two other victims, who are the driver’s wife, 41, and son, 17, are currently being treated at the Tawau Hospital emergency ward.

According to him, six of them were from Semporna heading to Papar while the lorry driver made a stop at a nearby grocery store.

“With the help of the public, all victims were removed from the vehicle and taken to the Kalabakan Health Clinic for early treatment. “However, the driver’s son reportedly died on the way to the clinic,” he said.

Jasmin said the police are still investigating the case under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
