TAWAU: A Royal Malaysian Customs officer was sentenced to one year in prison and fined RM15,000 by the Special Corruption Sessions Court here on Thursday for soliciting a RM3,000 bribe five years ago.

Judge Jason Juga handed the sentence to Ab Kassim Ab Kais, 56, after finding him guilty at the end of the defence case.

The court also ordered the accused to serve a 12-month jail term if he fails to pay the fine.

Ab Kassim, a Grade WK48 Assistant Director of Customs, was charged with requesting a RM3,000 bribe from an individual as an inducement to release a boat and engine seized for undeclared goods at the Tawau Customs office in September 2020.

The court granted a stay of execution for the prison sentence, but the fine had to be paid immediately, which the accused complied with.
