TAWAU: Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Datuk Christina Liew welcomed the official launching of the Tawau International Cultural Centre (TICC) development project by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, here.
She said a facility of this stature will promote cultural exchange, enhance cultural activities, and take cultural tourism to a new level for Tawau.
On another development, Liew said the announcement by the CM that two new tourism-related projects will be implemented here is good news for the people.
“These are the development of a proposed resort comprising 30 chalets at the Tawau Hills Park, and a Tawau jetty for tourism purposes.

“These two new projects plus the upcoming TICC will definitely spur trade and economic growth as well as create investment opportunities in this east coast town,” Liew said in a statement, Saturday.
While officiating at the Groundbreaking Ceremony for the development of the Tawau International Cultural Centre (TICC), Hajiji said to applause: “Certainly, we will develop a resort at the Tawau Hills Park.”
Meanwhile, Tawau Municipal Council (MPT) President, Joseph Pang, said the construction of TICC at Jalan Traulsen Sabindo has the potential to mark the beginning of Tawau’s transformation as one of Malaysia’s gateways to the Nusantara.
He highlighted the significance of the project in leveraging opportunities following Indonesia’s decision to move its capital to the Nusantara.
He stated that the proposed TICC development is a collaborative effort between MPT and local representatives aimed at advancing the tourism sector in Tawau.
“The planned construction of TICC aligns with the goals of Sabah Maju Jaya, focusing on infrastructure development to stimulate tourism and the economy in the Tawau district while ensuring the well-being and harmony of the local community,” he remarked.
Pang expressed confidence that upon completion, TICC will attract more tourists to Tawau.
According to him, the TICC project received approval from the State Government and will be executed by MPT on a 3.24-hectare plot owned by MPT.
Pang said the project includes two single-story blocks featuring enclosed buildings, open spaces, food court and parking area.
“The TICC will also house a convention hall with a capacity of 2,000 visitors for hosting programmes related to arts, culture and related activities,” he said.
Additionally, there will be a mini theatre that can accommodate up to 300 people, an open theatre for 600 people and a Cultural Arts and Music Exhibition Gallery to showcase the unique cultural richness of Tawau.
“To promote local handicrafts and generate revenue, the TICC will also have stalls for handicrafts and food representing the diverse ethnic cultures of the district,” he added.
