KUALA LUMPUR: Hours after the Malaysian government confirmed the nation will broadcast the upcoming FIFA World Cup, the National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) has warned that lessons must not be compromised by the tournament.
NUTP secretary-general Fouzi Singon said the 2026 edition — the longest in history, spanning 39 days — is expected to have a significant impact on both students and teachers.
“The NUTP urges parents to take greater responsibility in managing their children, particularly in regulating sleep schedules and ensuring that revision and school responsibilities are not neglected,” Fouzi told Twentytwo13.
“The risk of absenteeism due to early morning viewing is expected to be high, alongside the likelihood of incomplete homework and students feeling sleepy in class.”
The union also advised teachers to exercise caution and maintain professionalism to avoid misunderstandings that could lead to parental complaints or legal implications.
“Teachers are encouraged to remain focused on delivering effective teaching and learning, while planning lessons carefully despite the challenges posed by fatigued students,” Fouzi said.
“The teaching profession must be carried out with responsibility and professionalism, with priority given to teachers’ safety and well-being.”
He added that student discipline and personal management should remain the primary responsibility of parents.
“Teachers should ensure proper documentation and avoid any form of physical contact when addressing student-related issues.”
While acknowledging the concerns, Fouzi noted it was natural for parents, students, and teachers to want to follow the tournament. The reminder by NUTP, he said, was due to trends observed in schools during previous editions of the tournament.
This year’s World Cup will be the largest ever, featuring 48 teams and a record 104 matches. Matches held across Canada, Mexico, and the USA will largely kick off at 3am, 6am, 9am, and 10am Malaysian time.
Earlier today, Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil confirmed that the tournament will be aired via Unifi TV and RTM.
Unifi TV is set to broadcast all 104 matches, while RTM will air the majority of the tournament.
