AN 18-year-old boy who went missing while swimming in a disused mining pool along Jalan Kilang Simen, Kota Bharu, was found drowned on Sunday morning
The victim, Muhammad Fazrul Qusry Ahmad Asmawi, had reportedly been fishing with friends before he entered the water for a swim. He was last seen attempting to swim across the pool before disappearing beneath the surface.
Gopeng Fire and Rescue (JPBM) Station chief, Sharudi Muhamad Halil, said a search and rescue (SAR) operation was launched immediately after the alarm was raised at 6.49pm on Saturday.

“The victim was the nephew of one of our firefighters at Gopeng station. Surface search operations were carried out using boats, but we were forced to suspend the operation at 11.15pm due to poor visibility,” he said on Sunday.
The search resumed the next morning. A Water Rescue Unit (PPDA) diver located the body at 9.40am during an underwater search.
“The victim was found approximately 4.5 metres from the bank, at a depth of between three to seven metres,” Sharudi said.
The body was brought to shore and handed over to the police for further action.
A total of 16 firefighters were involved in the operation, with assistance from police, the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM), and local volunteers. - May 18, 2025
