Teenage girl who died in River Wear tragedy ‘made family proud from day one’

  • The family of 16-year-old Zara Shaw have paid tribute to their beautiful girl following her death when a car plunged into the River Wear in Sunderland.
  • Zara Shaw died alongside Jackson Duke, 17, and Luke Etheridge, 16, after a black Audi A3 entered the water near Wearmouth Bridge on Tuesday.
  • A 17-year-old boy survived the crash with non-serious injuries and was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, before being released on bail.
  • In a statement released through Northumbria Police, Zara's family thanked emergency services and remembered her zest for life, infectious laugh and smile.
  • Northumbria Police are continuing investigations to establish who was driving and how the vehicle came to enter the water.
