TAWAU: A 17-year-old female was arrested last Saturday for allegedly attempting to extort RM5,000 from a driver by threatening to “sell” his girlfriend.

Tawau District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said the suspect was apprehended in the Fajar area by a police team led by Inspector Kasinam Kadri at 5.30pm.

The arrest followed a police report made by a 47-year-old man who claimed he received threatening WhatsApp messages on Aug 5, at 9pm.

The victim received another message on Aug 6, at 2.47pm, demanding RM5,000 in exchange for the safe return of his girlfriend.

He was also threatened that his girlfriend would be “sold” if he failed to pay the demanded sum.

Following these threats, the victim reported the matter to the police.

During the investigation, police identified and arrested the suspect, who is originally from Sandakan. An iPhone 13 believed used in the extortion attempt was seized.

Jasmin said the case is being investigated under Section 384 of the Penal Code for extortion, which carries a maximum penalty of up to 10 years’ imprisonment, fines, whipping, or both.
