- Two young hackers, Thalha Jubair, 20, and Owen Flowers, 18, have been jailed for a cyber attack on Transport for London (TfL) between 31 August and 3 September 2024.
- The "extremely serious hack" forced TfL to disconnect its systems to prevent "catastrophic damage", resulting in £29 million in damages and £10 million in lost income.
- The hackers gained "highest privileged access" to TfL's network, leading to all 27,000+ employees having to reset passwords in person and disrupting services like Oyster refunds and contactless payments.
- Jubair and Flowers, linked to the "Scattered Spider" group, were each sentenced to five years and six months in prison at Woolwich Crown Court.
- The court heard their actions were primarily motivated by "selfish bravado", with Flowers also admitting to attempting to hack US healthcare systems.
