A framework agreement between the United States and Iran aimed at ending the war has been digitally signed by the presidents of both countries and has entered into force, according to Iranian officials.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said the text had been finalized, and the agreement had officially taken effect, state media reported. He said there would be no signing ceremony in Switzerland.
A US official confirmed to dpa that US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian had signed the agreement. It remained unclear how the signing had taken place.
Axios reporter Barak Ravid, citing two US officials, also wrote on X that the framework agreement was now in force.
According to Iranian broadcaster Press TV, Baghaei said the decision to have the agreement signed by the two presidents had been deliberate, citing past experience. Having the presidents sign the deal would raise the political cost of any breach, he was quoted as saying.
The agreement had originally been due to be formally signed in Switzerland on Friday, with Vice President JD Vance expected to travel there for the signing.
Trump had already raised the prospect of an earlier signing during the G7 summit in the French spa town of Évian, saying it could happen as soon as Thursday.
The US and Iran agreed on the deal on Sunday after weeks of negotiations.
The framework agreement is aimed at an immediate and lasting end to military operations, including in Lebanon. Under the agreement, the two sides are not to carry out further military operations against each other.
