Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli disclosed that he had been approached by an intermediary purportedly representing businessman Albert Tei Jiann Cheing, but chose not to pursue any discussions, describing the incident as another routine example in Malaysian political dealings.

Rafizi addressed the matter during episode 24 of the Yang Bakar Menteri podcast, confirming that a message had been delivered to him through a middleman claiming to act on Tei’s behalf. From the outset, Rafizi said he saw no reason to engage, viewing it as typical of political negotiations in the country.

“Some paid, some received, and everyone acted surprised when it came to light,” he remarked in a Facebook post. For Rafizi, the situation represented a “deal that didn’t work out” rather than a narrative of heroes versus villains.

He stressed that the core issue lies with public officials who received bribes, not intermediaries or brokers. According to Rafizi, the public expects accountability from elected figures, who hold mandates derived from voters’ trust, rather than merely from the individuals facilitating payments.

“Albert remains the bribe giver, but the recipients are those entrusted with public office. The people cannot accept a system where only brokers face consequences while those who took the money evade responsibility,” he stated.

Rafizi further criticized attempts to portray Albert Tei as a whistleblower hero. He clarified that a true whistleblower is someone embedded within a system who exposes wrongdoing out of principle, willing to take risks without any personal stake, unlike intermediaries caught in the fallout after funds have moved.

He indicated that a more comprehensive review of recent developments would be shared in the podcast’s upcoming episode. The discussion will examine the broader implications of the bribery case and the importance of holding accountable public figures who misuse their positions.

The revelations come amid high-profile corruption charges involving Tei and former senior political secretary Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin, highlighting ongoing public concern over transparency and integrity in governance. Rafizi’s remarks underline the necessity of focusing on systemic accountability rather than individual intermediaries in political scandals.
