SANDAKAN: Construction of the Telupid Fire and Rescue Station, expected to begin by the end of this year, is set to bring major benefits to the surrounding communities once completed.

Sabah Fire and Rescue Department Director, Senior Assistant Fire Commissioner Mohd Pisar Aziz, said the project has been approved and is currently at the tender procurement stage.

“The Telupid Fire and Rescue Station will benefit residents not only in Telupid but also in areas such as Tongod and Penangah.

“Its presence will help reduce response time for fire and rescue-related needs in the district,” he said.

Mohd Pisar was speaking to the media after making an official working visit to Zone 6 Office and Sandakan Fire and Rescue Station on Thursday.

The visit was aimed at engaging with the Sandakan fire personnel while reviewing the progress of departmental activities and responsibilities.

Earlier in his speech, Mohd Pisar reminded fire personnel to prioritise health and maintain fitness as a key foundation of the department’s rescue mission, enabling them to perform efficiently and effectively.

“To this end, we have introduced the One Day One Kilometre Run health programme.

“It is mandatory for all fire personnel, with no exceptions, even for those nearing retirement, as we want to instil health-conscious culture at the station level,” he said.

On response time, he noted that Sabah’s unique challenge lies in the wide distribution of fire stations and the often remote location of emergencies.

“Therefore, we are considering measures to bring our services closer to the community by forming teams such as Community Firefighters, Volunteer Firefighting Teams (PBS), and other initiatives.

“These efforts are also aimed at raising awareness among the public on the importance of fire safety in their own premises,” he added.
