THE Dewi Sri Pathrakaliamman Temple issue will not affect voter support for the unity government in the upcoming Ayer Kuning by-election.
MIC deputy president Datuk Seri M Saravanan said he is confident that voters, especially among the Indian community, are mature and wise enough to make their own judgements when voting.
"We have placed our trust and confidence in the government to resolve this issue.
"So I am confident that it will not affect the confidence of voters in the upcoming by-election."
"All this time, the support from the Indian community has been strong and there have been no issues with us (the government)," he said when met in Tapah.
Saravanan said the explanations given by Indian community leaders, including himself, have greatly calmed the situation.
“The government itself has assured that it will handle the situation.
“We don't need to worry and make it a bigger issue. "We respect this country, Islam as the official religion, and we will abide by the government's decision which will be in the best interest of all," he said.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reminded all parties not to become 'champions' in the issue involving the status of the temple.
The parties involved in the temple relocation issue are negotiating and seeking the best way to resolve the matter to ensure it proceeds smoothly, he stressed.
Meanwhile, Saravanan, who is also the Member of Parliament for Tapah, informed that this year's Aidilfitri contribution involved 1,029 Form Five and Six students from 11 schools.
