Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag set up a face-to-face meeting with Andre Onana to secure the Cameroonian goalkeeper.

United have a new no.1 going into the Premier League season, with David De Gea moving on after the expiry of his contract.

Onana, who signed from Inter Milan, is a former Ajax player and has worked with Ten Hag at the Dutch giants.

Per The Athletic, Ten Hag began working on the deal when De Gea's howlers cost United the FA Cup final against Manchester City.

The Spaniard had made other high profile mistakes late in the season, which reduced his bargaining power in contract talks.

United initially had to convince Onana to sign, as the Cameroonian feared he may have to play second fiddle to De Gea if he joined.
