Ten people, including three children, have been killed in an armed attack in Mexico just weeks before the start of football's World Cup, authorities said.
The incident took place early Sunday in the small community of Tehuitzingo in the state of Puebla, according to the state prosecutor’s office. The motive is believed to be a family dispute.
Local media said the victims included a 14-year-old, a 10-year-old and a baby. All were found inside a house, bound and with gunshot wounds to the head, broadcaster N+ reported. Most of the victims are believed to have been members of the same family.
The town lies about 200 kilometres south of the Estadio Azteca stadium in Mexico City, where the opening match between Mexico and South Africa is scheduled for June 11.
The government has pledged to guarantee security for the tournament. While many regions in Mexico are affected by drug-related violence, the capital itself is not considered among the most dangerous cities in the country.
