Kota Kinabalu: Tenaga Nasional Berhad is assessing the damage inflicted on the Pangi hydroelectric station in Tenom following the recent landslide due to floods that forced it to be shut down temporarily.

“An exact figure will be made known in three days,” said Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) CEO Ir Ts Mohd Yaakob Jaafar.

“A consultant will also be appointed to oversee safety aspects of cliffs surrounding the area,” said Mohd Yaakob.

He said a temporary path was cleared on Saturday with the help of the Royal Army Engineers Regiment and that some 70 personnel are involved in clean-up work.

Six personnel were trapped when the landslide occurred and were rescued by Fire and Rescue services personnel.

Yaakob said thanks to an applied Emergency Response Plan (ERP), risks on the fateful day were minimized resulting in zero losses of life.

“While the station is completely shut down for the time being, power supply to the Tenom area is fed with the State’s reserve margin which could last for a very long time.

“We are focusing on clean-up and mitigation works if another landslide were to happen. The team is carefully observing water flow from the hills when it rains,” he said told reporters.

The seven male victims on Saturday included two auxiliary policemen aged 29 to 42 who were trapped in the power house area of the building some 5km from the main entrance
