Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, the Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry (Miti), has stepped down from his role as Selangor Umno treasurer, citing dissatisfaction with the party's revival efforts in the state.
In a statement on Facebook today, Tengku Zafrul expressed his decision, stating, "Effective immediately, I resign from the position of Selangor Umno treasurer." He highlighted his disappointment with the party's lackluster implementation of central Umno's revival plans in Selangor.
"I witnessed for myself how party president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and the national leadership never stopped charting the way for the revival of the party at the central level," Tengku Zafrul said. “But no matter how great the central planning is, in Selangor the implementation is dull and there are times when it is not in line with the central theme.”
Tengku Zafrul, who was appointed as the Selangor Umno treasurer over a year ago, emphasized his commitment to contributing positively to Umno's revival in the state. "My approach and principles are simple, if I cannot contribute to any positive changes or improvements, then I should not hold a position. I should vacate the position for someone who can contribute more effectively," he stated.
Highlighting the importance of Selangor in Malaysian politics, Tengku Zafrul noted its diverse demographics and economic significance. He stressed that a party without a strong presence in Selangor could hardly be considered a national party or one fit for the future. "To avoid this reality, effective strategies need to be devised by the current realities," he added.
Despite resigning as Selangor Umno treasurer, Tengku Zafrul expressed gratitude for the appointment and vowed to continue his duties as the elected Umno Divisional Leader and Supreme Working Council Member. He concluded by expressing hope that Umno, especially Selangor Umno, would regain its standing in the state's political landscape.
Tengku Zafrul's resignation comes as a blow to Selangor Umno, raising questions about the party's strategy and leadership in the state. His departure underscores the challenges faced by Umno as it seeks to revive its fortunes in Selangor and beyond.
Tengku Zafrul's departure leaves a void in Selangor Umno's leadership, prompting the party to reconsider its approach and priorities in the state. His emphasis on the need for effective strategies and strong implementation reflects broader concerns within Umno about its ability to connect with voters and regain relevance.
As Selangor remains a key battleground state, especially in the context of Malaysia's dynamic political landscape, Umno's performance in the state will be closely watched. Tengku Zafrul's resignation serves as a reminder to political parties of the importance of grassroots support and effective leadership at all levels.
Moving forward, Selangor Umno will need to address the issues raised by Tengku Zafrul and work towards a more cohesive and impactful strategy. The party's ability to adapt to changing dynamics and reconnect with the people of Selangor will be crucial in determining its future success.
Tengku Zafrul's decision to step down highlights the complexities and challenges faced by political parties in Malaysia. It serves as a call to action for Umno and other parties to reevaluate their strategies and priorities in order to remain relevant in the ever-evolving political landscape of the country.
