KUALA LUMPUR — Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz has said he will remain in politics after his term as senator ends in December.
Speaking at a Bursa Malaysia Invest Malaysia session in Singapore today, Tengku Zafrul said he intended to continue serving the government “in any way” despite having no concrete plans once his upper house mandate expires.
“I’ll stick to politics and see how I can help the government in any way, other than the position I’m in today,” he told an audience at the fireside chat, which was moderated by Bursa Malaysia chief executive Fad’l Mohamed during the Macquarie Asean Conference.
The minister, who is also president of the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), stressed he had no intention of returning to the private sector.
Before entering politics, Tengku Zafrul spent more than two decades in banking and financial services, including as group chief executive of CIMB Group Holdings and president commissioner of PT Bank CIMB Niaga in Indonesia.
He was first appointed senator to take up ministerial duties in 2020 and began his second and final term in the Dewan Negara in December 2022, the maximum allowed under parliamentary rules. — August 18, 2025
