TENS of thousands of demonstrators marched through Minneapolis on Saturday to protest the fatal shooting of 37-year-old Renee Good by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer, part of more than 1,000 rallies organised nationwide this weekend against the federal government’s deportation operations.
Reuters reported today that despite a bitterly cold wind, the large turnout in Minnesota’s largest city underscored the deep public reaction to Good’s death on Wednesday, with officials from the state’s Democratic leadership and the Trump administration offering sharply divergent accounts of the incident.
Led by Indigenous Mexican dancers, protesters made their way to the residential street where Good was shot in her car. Chants of “Abolish ICE” and “No justice, no peace — get ICE off our streets” rang out across the city, reflecting the anger and grief of the crowd, which the Minneapolis Police Department estimated in the tens of thousands.
"I'm insanely angry, completely heartbroken and devastated, and then just like longing and hoping that things get better," said Ellison Montgomery, a 30-year-old protester, capturing the sentiments of many in attendance.
Minnesota officials have described the shooting as unjustified, citing bystander video they say shows Good’s car turning away from the agent at the moment she was fired upon.
The Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE, has maintained that the agent acted in self-defence, claiming Good, a volunteer monitoring ICE operations, drove her vehicle toward the officer after another agent had approached the driver’s side and instructed her to exit the car.
The incident occurred shortly after some 2,000 federal officers were deployed to the Minneapolis-St. Paul area in what DHS has called its largest operation ever, heightening tensions between the Trump administration and state Democratic leaders.
Federal-state tensions intensified on Thursday when a U.S. Border Patrol agent in Portland, Oregon, shot and injured a man and woman following an attempted vehicle stop, with DHS asserting that the driver had attempted to "weaponize" his car against the officers.
In response to these incidents, a coalition of progressive and civil rights groups, including Indivisible and the American Civil Liberties Union, organised the “ICE Out For Good” events, scheduling rallies nationwide on Saturday and Sunday, with all planned to conclude before nightfall to minimise risks of violence. - January 11, 2026
