THE family of the late Teoh Beng Hock rejected an apology from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki, labelling it a publicity stunt tied to the 16th anniversary of Beng Hock's death.
The late Teoh's younger sister, Teoh Lee Lan, 45, said the apology did not reflect sincerity.
"The MACC's intention to provide a charitable contribution to the family, especially for the deceased's children as a sign of concern is an act of shame for the family.
"If he (Azam) thinks that lives can be bought with money, then hand over the 'lives' of the five MACC officers named previously who are responsible for Beng Hock's death and we will provide a charitable contribution to the MACC again and present an apology," she said at a press conference.
She said this in response to Azam's statement expressing an apology and sympathy for the suffering endured by Beng Hock's family.
The apology was presented on the 16th anniversary of the death of Beng Hock, who was also the Political Secretary to the then Selangor EXCO, Ean Yong Hian Wah.
Lee Lan said the Teoh Beng Hock Association for Democratic Advancement (TBH-ADA) is prepared to raise RM3.3 million as a symbolic gesture against the notion that compensation could substitute justice.
She added that the family's pursuit has always been about justice, not financial settlement.
Beng Hock died on July 16, 2009. He was found on the fifth floor of Plaza Masalam, Shah Alam, a day after being questioned at the MACC office on the 14th floor. – July 17, 2025
