THE Terengganu state executive councillor arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will remain in office and continue carrying out his duties pending court proceedings, the Menteri Besar has confirmed.

Terengganu Menteri Besar Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar said the state administration would adhere to the legal principle that an individual is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

“The Exco remains in his position, and his duties continue as usual. According to the principles of law, a person is not guilty until proven guilty through a fair trial,” he told Berita Harian today.

The councillor is scheduled to be charged at the Kuala Terengganu Sessions Court at 9am.

It is understood that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission has obtained the consent of the public prosecutor to proceed with charges against the political leader.

Ahmad Samsuri said the state government would leave the matter entirely to the legal process and declined to comment further.

“Let the law determine the matter. I have no further comment. He is entitled to a fair trial, just like all of us. That is the principle of justice,” he said.

The arrest follows allegations that the EXCO member abused his position by instructing that his two children be appointed to posts within state-linked companies.

The suspect is believed to have used his role as an executive councillor and chairman of the board of a state-owned company to direct that both children be employed by two subsidiaries of a state government-linked company.

The case is being investigated under Section 23 of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009, which concerns the abuse of office for gratification. - February 24, 2026
