A man in Terengganu has been sentenced to 6 months in jail and fined RM500 for flying the Israeli flag. Back in October, it was stated that the police had been investigating a businessman who had allegedly raised an Israeli flag at a shophouse in Marang, Terengganu.

In recent reports, it was stated that the man Harma Zulfika Deraman, pleaded guilty after the charge was read to him before magistrate Zur Azureen Zainalkefli at the Marang magistrates’ court.

Harma was charged under the National Emblems (Control of Display) Act 1949 with displaying the Israeli flag in a public place and was alleged to have committed the act at a vehicle accessory shop at Kampung Padang Lebam in Bukit Payung on Oct 19.

Section 3(1) of the Act states that “no person shall display in public, or at, or within any school, any national emblem” and the offence is punishable under Section 8(1)(i) of the same law, which provides for a maximum 6 months in prison, a fine of up to RM500, or both, upon conviction.

The 6 month sentence will commence after Harma completes a five-year prison sentence for a previous drug offence.
