It seems that the Terengganu state government is on a mission to regulate the wardrobes of international tourists with a newfound zeal for "syariah-compliant" dress codes.
They've even gone so far as to announce that this fashion policing will commence right at the state's entrance, as if travelers are expected to strip down to their "approved" attire before crossing the border.
Perhaps they plan to have a fashion police squad stationed at Pulau Redang and Pulau Perhentian, ready to issue citations to any unsuspecting tourists who dare to wear shorts or sleeveless tops. And let's not forget the educational signboards they intend to place at all entrances to Terengganu, as if tourists are incapable of understanding the local customs without visual aids.
That prompted a Facebook user of suggesting what the signboard might look like. He has cynically designed a signage made up of a two piece bikini in green complete with the logo of the ruling party of the state.
It's amusing to think that international tourists, who come from diverse cultural backgrounds and have their own fashion sensibilities, will suddenly transform into fashion disciples of the state's "syariah-compliant" standards.
But the most cynical part of all this is the assertion that some Muslim tourists have been dressing provocatively due to a lack of education. It's as if tourists need a crash course in wardrobe ethics before they can enjoy a relaxing vacation.
While respecting local customs and traditions is important, attempting to regulate the dress code of international tourists with such fervour might just leave a bad taste in their mouths and discourage them from visiting altogether.
After all, a vacation should be about relaxation and enjoyment, not a fashion show judged by the state government. Pray no fashion police issue a summon for wearing your swim shorts next time you are on your vacation on Pulau Redang.
