The issue of Halal certificates has been discussed lately, especially after JAKIM released statements about popular eateries without Halal certifications. Teresa Kok, the member of Parliament for Seputeh, also had something to say about it.

“The requirement for Halal certificates on restaurants and food companies that do not serve pork and alcohol will create burden on small businesses, including Malay restaurant operators.”

In a statement shared via her Facebook post, Teresa also said this is against the spirit of cultural diversity in Malaysia and may turn the country into a laughingstock worldwide.

“This shouldn’t be compulsory, but optional. If it’s made compulsory, it will only increase the administrative costs.”

Teresa added that halal certification is seen as hindering consumers’ freedom of choice and going against the country’s spirit of cultural diversity.

“Consumers have the right to choose whether to visit a halal certified restaurant or not. This does not respect the wishes of consumers.”

The Seputeh MP also suggested that the government focus on economic recovery and improving the well-being of the people rather than making unnecessary regulations.

“You shouldn’t have said that, it’s not helpful”

Prime Minister Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim responded to Teresa’s controversial take and assured Malaysians that her words do not represent Pakatan Harapan.

During the officiating ceremony for the Rest and Treatment Area (R&R) Seremban today (September 8) shared on his Facebook account, Anwar also said Teresa’s statement was unnecessary because it created an irrelevant controversy in our society.

“If she feels that the regulations are not necessary in a certain area, discuss it properly. Her statement was not helpful in clarifying the situation.”

PMX added that the sentiments of the Muslim friends have to be taken care of.

What do you think of Teresa and PMX’s takes on this matter?
