More than three decades after the sudden passing of Mandopop icon Teresa Teng, new revelations have surfaced - offering a tragic glimpse into her final moments and reigniting discussion about a little-understood health risk: the dangers of showering immediately after exercise, especially for those with respiratory conditions.

On May 8, 1995, Teng died at the age of 42 while on a retreat in Chiang Mai, Thailand, weary of her celebrity and seeking to avoid the limelight. The beloved singer, known for her gentle voice and timeless classics, had long suffered from asthma. Although there were endless waves of conspiracy theories, her sudden death was officially attributed to respiratory failure following a severe asthma attack. However, details surrounding the incident remained largely unclear - until now.

In a recent interview, her former butler, Praphan “Billy” Bonsook - one of the last people to see the singer alive - broke a 31-year silence to dispel many of the conspiracy theories surrounding the superstar’s death. He revealed that Teng had appeared completely normal earlier that morning when he delivered her breakfast at the Imperial Mae Ping Hotel, now rebranded as the InterContinental Chiang Mai The Mae Ping. However, events took a tragic turn later in the day.

Billy, now 55, spent 29 years working at the Imperial Mae Ping Hotel and later established a self-curated memorial, “The Story of Teresa Teng by Billy,” where he shares his memories with fans and visitors, keeping her story alive in Chiang Mai. He first met Teng during her initial visit to the hotel in 1993. “I didn’t know who Teresa Teng was or recognize her music,” he said.

Established in 1991, the Imperial Mae Ping was Chiang Mai’s first internationally managed luxury hotel, distinguished by its 15-storey arc-shaped tower set within a sprawling northern Thai-style garden. Teng stayed in the Royal Prince Suite, and over the years, Billy developed a close familiarity with her, chatting and joking with the singer on an almost daily basis. He recalled Teng as friendly, lively, and full of fun. She would teach him English and Japanese phrases, and in return, he introduced her to snippets of Thai.

According to him, Teng had exercised before returning to her room, where she took a bath. Shortly after, she began experiencing acute breathing difficulties. Alone at the time - her French partner Paul Quilery was not present - she had no immediate assistance. By the time Billy realized something was wrong, her condition had deteriorated rapidly.

What makes the situation even more heartbreaking is that Teng reportedly did not have her emergency asthma medication within reach. As her symptoms escalated - her limbs going numb and her body convulsing - precious minutes slipped away. Efforts to rush her to Chiang Mai Ram Hospital were further hindered by heavy traffic, ultimately costing her the critical window needed for life-saving intervention.

Billy’s account also revealed a detail that has since sparked widespread discussion: Teng had bathed immediately after exercising. While this may seem harmless, online discussions revealed that sudden exposure to hot steam and temperature changes after physical exertion can trigger bronchospasm in asthma sufferers. During exercise, the airways are already sensitive due to increased breathing rates. Introducing hot, humid air too quickly - such as from a hot shower - can exacerbate airway constriction, potentially leading to a severe asthma attack.

For individuals with asthma, this serves as a sobering reminder. Resting and allowing the body to cool down gradually after exercise is crucial. Keeping emergency inhalers within reach at all times can also mean the difference between life and death.

The emotional weight of that day still lingers for Billy, who expressed deep regret over not being able to act sooner. In the years since, he has taken it upon himself to learn first aid, hoping never to be as helpless again. He also disclosed that he had been instructed by hotel management to remain silent about the incident and even change his name identity - restrictions that have only recently been lifted.

Teresa Teng’s legacy continues to resonate across generations, but her untimely death now carries an added layer of cautionary significance. It is not just a story of loss - it is a reminder that even the most routine habits can pose hidden dangers when health vulnerabilities are overlooked.
