Terrifying CCTV shows people fleeing seconds before floodwaters engulf Nepal-Tibet border crossing

CCTV footage shows people fleeing seconds before powerful floodwaters overtake a border crossing between Nepal and China’s Tibet region.

On 26 August, a torrential flood swept through the area along the Himalayan border, destroying buildings, roads and bridges on the Bhotekoshi river.

On Friday, the reported death toll in Nepal rose to at least 469 people, according to local media.

More than 650 foreigners were still unaccounted for. Nepali authorities were yet to determine the number of locals missing.

Experts said an avalanche from a glacier was the likely cause of floods in this warming Himalaya region.

Nepal disaster expert Bishal Nath Upreti described the flash floods as a “tsunami from the sky”, saying villages along a 40-50km stretch were completely wiped out.
