For everything that matters in tech

Tesla has officially arrived in Malaysia today, complete with a huge launch event at Pavilion KL. That said, the company has already accepted bookings for the Model Y since last week.

Some have been wondering whether Malaysian pricing has taken sales tax into account. At the launch event today, Tesla Malaysia confirmed on stage that the pricing shown on its website does include sales tax.

In our market, the fully electric SUV comes in three different variants:

  • Rear Wheel Drive  RM199,000
  • All-Wheel Drive Long Range  RM246,000
  • All-Wheel Drive Performance  RM288,000

However, these are just the prices of the vehicle itself and do not include related fees such as the delivery & administration and number plate. There is also an RM1,000 order fee but this is something that you already have to fork out when you book the EV.

So, taking all those fees into consideration, this is what you have to pay for a Model Y as shown by the checkout page on Tesla Malaysia's website:

  • Rear Wheel Drive  RM200,700
  • All-Wheel Drive Long Range  RM247,700
  • All-Wheel Drive Performance  RM288,700

The checkout page did mention that the above price does not include taxes and other fees. Furthermore, insurance is also not included in the calculation. With the current tax incentives, Tesla EVs are currently exempted from import and excise duties, as well as road tax until the end of 2025.

For the Malaysian market, the Model Y is currently available in five different colours including Pearl White, Solid Black, Midnight Silver Metallic, Deep Blue and Red. However, only the Pearl White option comes without extra cost while it would cost you an additional RM5,000 to have the Solid Black, Midnight Silver Metallica, or Deep Blue.

If you want to go for the Red, then you need to add RM10,000 instead. Meanwhile, there are also other upgrades and options that one can get for their Model Y.

For example, an additional RM10,000 allows you to go from 19″ Gemini to 20″ Induction Wheels. For RM5,000, you can also have a White interior instead of Black.

Let's not forget about tech features too. To get the Enhanced Autopilot suite, the fee is RM16,000 while the Full Self-Driving (FSD) Capability is listed at RM32,000.
