Thai army accuses Cambodia of ceasefire breaches following landmark truce

CAMBODIA has violated a newly established ceasefire agreement by launching attacks at multiple locations along the border, a Thai army spokesperson claimed on Tuesday, just one day after both nations agreed to end their deadliest confrontation in over a decade.

In a statement issued in Bangkok, Major General Winthai Suvaree said Thai forces responded with measured retaliatory fire in self-defence.

“Thai troops have retaliated proportionately in self-defence,” Reuters cited him saying.

The allegations come less than 24 hours after the leaders of Thailand and Cambodia met in Malaysia, where they agreed to implement a ceasefire from midnight on Monday. The truce followed five days of intense cross-border fighting that forced over 300,000 civilians to flee their homes.

The reported ceasefire violations risk undermining the fragile agreement, which was brokered in Putrajaya with the assistance of Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, and had been hailed as a critical breakthrough in restoring regional stability. - July 29, 2025
