KUALA LUMPUR – Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to appoint Malaysia as mediator in their ongoing border conflict, with both sides expected to begin talks in Kuala Lumpur tomorrow evening, according to Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.
He said the decision was reached after discussions with his counterparts from both countries, who expressed confidence in Malaysia’s role as a neutral party.
“Both foreign ministers agreed that no external parties should be involved in this issue,” he said.
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand’s Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai are scheduled to arrive in Malaysia tomorrow ahead of the discussions.
Mohamad added that the United States has shown interest in the issue, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio expected to make contact soon. However, he stressed that Malaysia should lead the mediation effort as it falls within Asean’s purview and Malaysia currently holds the Asean chairmanship.
“This is an internal Asean matter. As chair, Malaysia should take the lead,” he said as reported by Bernama. – July 27, 2025
