Tragedy struck a football match which was held at Sungai Golok yesterday (Aug 4) after a Thai football player lost his life following a lightning strike.
Footage of the incident has since gone viral, where it showed the players competing at an open field when lightning suddenly struck the middle of the pitch.
The camera then zoomed in on one of the players who had slumped to the ground while another player attempted to save his life by performing CPR.
1 dead, several injured
According to NST, Sungai Golok police chief Colonel Thun Sirikhunt said a Thai footballer was killed in the incident, while 12 others, including a Malaysian, were injured.
He said the incident took place at about 5.30pm local time (6.30pm Malaysia) during the semi-final match of the Golok FA Cup football tournament at Santiphap Stadium.
Sirikhunt added the match had already come to an end when heavy rain fell and lightning struck the middle of the field.
The Thai footballer was identified as Safwan Awe, while the injured Malaysian was Mohammad Alif Ezzahan Zulkifli, a player for SAMCOLT, a mixed team comprising Thai and Malaysian players.
“Police proceeded to the scene to examine the injured victims and, together with a doctor, conducted a post-mortem examination on the deceased in accordance with legal procedures,” said Sirikhunt.
The injured players were taken to Sungai Golok Hospital for treatment and police are now investigating the case.
