In the Magistrate’s Court, a 23-year-old Thai mechanic, Apisit Ratchamrong, entered a plea of not guilty to the charge of possessing controlled substances, encompassing over 1,000 litres of fuel. Apisit, hailing from Thailand, contested the accusation after it was presented in Thai by Magistrate Nurshahida Abdul Rahim.
The charge against Apisit revolves around the possession of 460 litres of diesel stored in four drums, and 570 litres of petrol stored in five drums, all without a proper license. The alleged incident occurred at Jalan Kampung Kolam, Kampung Kolam, Padang Besar around 9 am on March 7th.
This legal action falls under Section 21 of the Control of Supplies Act 1961 (Act 122), with corresponding punishment outlined in Section 22 (1) of the same law. If convicted, the penalty could entail a fine of up to RM1 million or a maximum imprisonment term of three years, or both.
During the proceedings, Apisit was not granted bail, and the court scheduled April 15th for the next mention of the case. The prosecution was led by Razali Mamat from the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry, while Apisit appeared in court without legal representation.
The case raises questions about the regulations surrounding the storage and possession of controlled substances, particularly in the context of fuel. Such regulations are put in place to ensure safety and compliance with legal standards, aiming to prevent potential hazards and unlawful activities.
The incident underscores the importance of adhering to licensing requirements and regulations pertaining to the handling of controlled substances. The court proceedings will shed further light on the specifics of the case and determine whether Apisit will be held accountable for the alleged offense.
As the legal process unfolds, it is imperative to consider the implications of such cases on public safety and the enforcement of regulatory measures. Authorities and relevant stakeholders play a crucial role in upholding these standards to maintain order and safeguard the well-being of the community.
