Thailand’s Prime Minister, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, has laid bare her extraordinary wealth, declaring assets worth over RM1.8 billion (US$400 million) as part of a mandatory disclosure to the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC).
Among her luxurious possessions are 217 designer handbags valued at over US$2 million and 75 luxury watches worth nearly US$5 million.
Paetongtarn, the youngest daughter of former prime minister and billionaire Thaksin Shinawatra, assumed office in September 2024, becoming the fourth member of her family to lead the Thai government in two decades.
Her declaration highlights her staggering wealth, rooted in the influential Shinawatra legacy.
Details of the Declaration
The declaration listed Paetongtarn’s assets as follows:
• 13.8 billion baht (~ RM1.8 billion) in total assets.
• 11 billion baht in investments.
• 1 billion baht in cash and deposits.
• Luxury items including 75 high-end watches worth 162 million baht and 217 handbags valued at 76 million baht.
• International properties in London and Japan.
Despite her significant assets, she also declared liabilities amounting to nearly 5 billion baht, leaving her with a net worth of 8.9 billion baht (approximately RM258 million).
A representative from the Pheu Thai Party confirmed to AFP, as reported in The Star, the accuracy of the figures published by Thai media.
A Family Legacy of Wealth and Power
The Shinawatra family’s wealth has long been a subject of fascination and controversy in Thailand. Paetongtarn's father, Thaksin, is estimated to have a net worth of US$2.1 billion, ranking among Thailand's wealthiest individuals.
His immense fortune, generated through the Shin Corp telecommunications empire, not only propelled him into politics but also cemented the family’s dominance over Thailand’s political landscape.
The Wealth-Power Nexus
Paetongtarn’s declaration highlights a broader narrative in Thailand, where wealth and political power are often intertwined. Analysts observe that this concentration of wealth fuels political instability and provides justification for frequent military interventions.
"Money plays a crucial role in political activities in a nation lacking a fully functioning democracy," stated Yuttaporn Issarachai of Sukhothai Thammathirat University.
Her predecessor, Srettha Thavisin, declared significantly lower assets of 985 million baht at the end of his term, reflecting a stark contrast in Thailand’s political elite.
Public Reaction and Transparency Challenges
While Paetongtarn’s disclosure fulfills a legal requirement, it has ignited debates about transparency and inequality in Thai politics. Such immense wealth among political leaders highlights a widening gap between the elite and ordinary citizens.
The Shinawatra dynasty’s return to power, coupled with its unbridled wealth, raises questions about the balance between democracy and the concentration of economic and political clout.
As Paetongtarn begins her term, the challenge lies not only in governing effectively but also in addressing public concerns over wealth, privilege, and fairness in the political arena.
