Olympic gold medallist Manus Boonjumnong arrested in Thailand for lottery fraud after failing to appear for his prison sentencing.

BANGKOK: Police in Thailand have arrested a fugitive Olympic gold medallist boxer who was on the run for fraud.

Officers tracked down and arrested Manus Boonjumnong (pic), 45, at a hideout in Nonthaburi province on Friday.

The suspect was wanted for failing to appear in court on two counts of fraud.

The light welterweight boxer won Olympic gold at Athens 2004 and a silver medal in Beijing four years later.

He was convicted of defrauding victims out of 2 million baht (RM264,000) in government lottery ticket quotas in 2021.

A court had sentenced him to two years and nine months in prison earlier this year.

Manus failed to appear at court for his sentencing, prompting the police search.

On Friday, the court ordered his imprisonment at Bangkok Remand Prison. – AFP
