THAILAND has announced that a new peace negotiation team, led by General Somsak Rungsita, is expected to commence operations shortly in efforts to resolve ongoing tensions in the country’s southern provinces.

Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow stressed the importance of dialogue despite the challenges, highlighting the central role of negotiations in achieving lasting peace.

“He (Somsak) understands the issues and hopes the new team can begin their work soon, particularly negotiations with those involved in acts of violence. Negotiations are important,” Sihasak told Bernama in an exclusive interview outside the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Meetings.

General Somsak, a former Secretary-General of Thailand’s National Security Council, was appointed earlier this month to lead the government delegation in peace talks with the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN), which has long been involved in insurgency in the southern provinces of Narathiwat, Yala, Pattani, and parts of Songkhla.

Sihasak also acknowledged Malaysia’s ongoing role as facilitator in promoting dialogue and peace efforts, describing Kuala Lumpur’s contribution as vital in addressing the prolonged conflict.

“We cooperate with Malaysia not only on peace negotiations but also on joint border development to bring shared prosperity to the region. Economic development plays a very important role in resolving the situation in the south alongside peace negotiations,” he said.

The minister further emphasised the importance of recognising the unique identity, culture, and history of southern communities, noting that understanding these deep-rooted values is crucial for long-term peace.

Malaysia has served as a facilitator in the peace process since 2013, with the current facilitator, Datuk Mohd Rabin Basir, former Director-General of Malaysia’s National Security Council, appointed on 1 July 2024. Talks between the Thai government and the BRN have faced obstacles, with negotiations stalled since mid-2024. - November 6, 2025
