Twenty children and three teachers have been found dead following a bus accident and fire near Bangkok. The bus was on its way back to the Thai capital after a school excursion up north. The bus, which was returning from a school trip, caught fire and was involved in a serious accident due to a burst front tire, resulting in numerous passengers becoming trapped. Witnesses described a heartbreaking scene as the vehicle was consumed by flames, releasing thick black smoke into the air, serving as a poignant reminder of the lives that were lost.

Transport Minister Suriyahe Juangroongruangkit stated that the vehicle was powered by "extremely risky" compressed natural gas.

Heartbreaking stories emerge from the ashes as the nation mourns. Young pupils, unable to flee through emergency exits, gathered at the rear of the bus, with some being comforted by their teachers, while the fire raged. A grieving child, who’s younger brother died in the fire, returned home in tears, saying, "He didn't come back with me," a haunting reminder of the unfolding tragedy.

Saman Chanput, the driver, was taken into custody a few hours following the collision. Police charged him with reckless driving leading to fatalities and injuries, as well as with failing to render aid and failing to report the incident. Although he initially fled the scene, he later admitted to law enforcement that he had attempted to retrieve a fire extinguisher from another vehicle but fled in a panic when the fire became uncontrollable before he could secure assistance.

As calls for stricter regulations and safety measures grow louder, Education Minister Permpoon Chidchob emphasised the necessity of safety measures for school trips, stressing the urgent need for reform. This tragic incident should act as a wake-up call for society to address the harsh reality of road safety in Thailand, as families grieve their lost loved ones. The loss of these innocent lives should not be seen as just a statistic; it should serve as a powerful reminder of the pressing need for change, compassion, and accountability in safeguarding the most vulnerable members of our community.
