That Sunshade On Your Car Window Could Cost You; Here’s What JPJ Actually Says

It’s a common sight on Malaysian roads — a magnetic or roll-up sunshade clipped to the rear window, keeping the back seat cool for the kids.

Many drivers assume that because it can be removed, it is legal, but the Road Transport Department (JPJ) says otherwise.

Under Malaysian traffic regulations, any curtain, blind, or sunshade attached to a vehicle’s windows is prohibited while the car is in motion — regardless of whether it is permanent or removable.

JPJ has explicitly stated that such materials obstruct a driver’s blind spots and side-mirror visibility, making them a safety hazard.

If caught, the compound fine escalates the longer you wait to pay: RM150 within 15 days, RM200 between 16 and 30 days, and RM300 between 31 and 60 days.

For more serious or repeat offences, penalties can be significantly higher, though published figures vary across sources and have not been independently verified against the latest regulations.

Parked Is Fine, Moving Is Not

The rule applies only while driving.

Sunshades are perfectly legal when the car is parked — many drivers use them to keep the cabin cool under the Malaysian sun — but they must be removed before the vehicle moves.

The only legally compliant alternative while driving is JPJ-approved window tint.

Current regulations require a minimum of 70% visible light transmission for the front windshield and 50% for the front side windows.

Rear passenger windows and the rear windshield have no such restriction under tinting rules — meaning a fully darkened rear tint film is legal, while a semi-transparent mesh shade on the same window is not.

You Can Go Pitch Black, Just Not With A Mesh Shade

The ban is not about heat — it is about what authorities can and cannot see.

JPJ’s Automotive Engineering Department cites three concerns: officers at roadblocks need a clear line of sight to verify seatbelt compliance and phone use; physical blinds provide cover for criminal activity; and rear-side shades reduce blind-spot visibility during lane changes, particularly in heavy rain or at night.

Under current regulations, rear windows can be tinted to 0% VLT with approved film — completely dark, entirely legal.

High-quality tint also rejects up to 90% of heat without obstructing the glass.

In JPJ’s view, the law has already given drivers everything they need — a position that has done little to quiet frustration online, where many drivers argue that quality tint remains expensive and out of reach for lower-income car owners.

Premium ceramic or crystalline tint film for a standard vehicle can run anywhere from RM2,700 to well above RM5,000 for specialised setups — compared to a magnetic sunshade available online for as little as RM20.
