One of the highlights for me revisiting the Philippines this time is receiving the gift of Asian Institute of Management (AIM) ALUMNI CARD with LIFETIME VALIDITY from Alumnus Bernie Jiao, AIM Executive Managing Director. I am fortunate with postgraduate scholarship awarded by PETRONAS was able to pursue and obtain a Master in Management (MM) degree from AIM in 1989. I learned the invaluable guide & wisdom to the mind & culture that make up from the professors to become ASIAN MANAGER as movers of the ‘Pacific century’. I can still remember my best teacher, the late Professor Gaby Mendoza, said:
“Appreciation of cultural differences can be as important as technical competence for business and managerial success in Asia. Deals are won or lost, careers are made or destroyed, and foreign investments flourish or fail depending on how one reacts to unprincipled and unaaccustomed cultural values. International managers can boost business by adapting modern techniques to the Asian setting.”
I recall in AIM classroom, students and professors illustrated learning with real cases & characters involved in management practices and leadership challenges in Asia. We highlighted relationship styles of multinationals and SMEs that can spell success or disaster.
