Elections are fast approaching and the mechanism of campaigning is in top gear.
We would expect all kinds of slurs and garbage rummaging to bring out the worst in the contenders to swing votes.
Politics or Poly-Tricks is a game for the crooked and not for the straight.
The past few days have been a treat of hot news about slanders and will follow till the day the indelible ink on the fingers of the Rakyat dries.
The tactical warfare or dirty tricks pursued by the hardcore gladiators of politics are only meant to garner votes through deception and to remain in power as long as they could.
Issues previously backburned, are now rising mercury, reaching cooking temperatures and only just before the election. The recipes are highlighted below.
PN (Mahathir Malay Proclamation) vs PH (Anwar)
Dr Mahathir has been actively and continuously condemning the PMX.
The Leaders of the opposition have collectively agreed to support the 12-point proclamation by Dr Mahathir who got his one-time political rivals onboard his wagon. The proven and cunning fox has once again skillfully turned the Malay issue into a Malay dilemma. The GE 14 saw a similar aggressive style of campaigning to bring down Najib Tun Razak and destroy UMNO after 6 decades of rule. This may be a genius masterstroke in shifting the Paradigm to bring down PH in the coming elections.
“Essentially, we agreed to strengthen the unity among the Malays and enhance support for Perikatan Nasional, especially in facing the (six state elections) soon,” said Muhyiddin
PN (Daim OPR (Mahathir’s Gang) vs PH Government
The story of billions of dollars being channelled by Tun Daim Zainuddin through offshore accounts to weaken the Ringgit in attempting to hike the OPR or Overnight Policy Rate.
The ringgit’s depreciation was not because of economic fundamentals but crumbled due to speculators and Malaysians who hoard their cash abroad.
Professor Jomo Kwame Sundaram, a research advisor at Khazanah Research Institute, also said that “Like many other currencies, the ringgit has weakened against the US dollar, particularly 7.6% since February this year. The ringgit has come under immense pressure as the spread between Malaysia’s overnight policy rate (OPR) and the Fed’s federal funds rate (FFR) widened rapidly over the past year. A big OPR-FFR differential, whereby the FFR is higher, causes the outflow of funds from Malaysia in search of higher returns elsewhere. In economics, these funds are often called “hot money, the OPR stands at 3%, while the FFR is at 5% to 5.25.”
PH Government vs PN’s Sanusi
The Kedah Chief Minister has been in the news for insulting the Sultan of Selangor. After being charged in court. This is a no-brainer as he will have to face the consequences of what he had implied, an air-tight case caught on video.
PH Government (MACC) vs PN’s Sanusi on REE
An investigation of his involvement in illegal rare earth mining in his state with two people remanded by the MACC immediately ensued. Something’s amiss! Why was the sudden interest by the ‘Independent’ MACC to investigate a report lodged in January 2023 by the Kedah Umno regarding the mining reopened after Sanusi’s arrest?
Beraya-Naza (Mahathir’s Gang) vs The PH & Spanco S/B
Tan Sri Vincent Tan is taking the Government to court over a breach of LOI or letter of Intent favouring the Berjaya-Naza partnership in a multi-million-ringgit vehicle fleet concession contract. However, following a change in administration with the appointment of Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as the prime minister, we received a notice three months later that our LoI had been terminated. Tan was questioning the current Government why the previous Government had agreed to pay RM700 million more to Spanco when they were the lowest bidder and to receive the Letter of Intent (LoI). Why the sudden interest in taking this to court only now and that too just before the elections?
PN’s Muhiddin vs PH Anwar (Felda debts)
Muhyiddin Yassin will sue Anwar Ibrahim for defamation over the prime minister’s claim that the Perikatan Nasional government did not write off RM8.3 billion in Felda settlers’ debt. Muhyiddin said the two documents Anwar produced earlier today did not concern the waiver of the RM8.3 billion owed by settlers, but the issuance of sukuk and revolving credit to Felda.
PH’s Anwar vs PN’s Muhiddin (Counter case on (Felda debts))
Immediately after Muhyiddin’s response to the PMX stating that Anwar had his facts wrong. Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has countered the accusation by a demand for an apology and RM200mil for defaming him over the Felda debt waiver issue via a letter of demand from his lawyers.
“Anwar's reference to the sukuk document as proof showed that he did not understand what he had signed. "This is dangerous. I don't know what other documents or agreements he has signed in his capacity as prime minister and finance minister without understanding or knowing about their contents. "Anwar is not qualified (incompetent) to remain as prime minister. The longer Malaysia is governed by the ‘Madanon Government’ of Anwar Ibrahim, the greater the harm to the people," said Muhyiddin using a term mocking Anwar's Madani slogan.
It was not the efficiency of politicians but it is the theatrical dynamics that were involved in the business of elections so watch out for more in the next few days.
The people must vote with a conscience to safeguard the Rakyat and Negara without being prejudiced by race, religion, colour or creed.
