When Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and his wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, visited China recently, a small but powerful moment caught everyone’s attention.
At the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin, Chinese President Xi Jinping extended his hand to greet Wan Azizah. Instead of shaking it, she smiled, bowed respectfully, and kept her hands close together.
In other words, she declined to accept President Xi's extended hand.
Why Did She Refuse?
For Muslims, it’s simple: adult men and women who are not closely related don’t touch each other. It’s not about rudeness, but about faith. UFC legend Khabib Nurmagomedov , for example, has made headlines for the same reason — politely refusing handshakes with women.
But here’s the catch: refusing a handshake, especially from someone as important as Xi Jinping, could have easily turned into an awkward — even embarrassing — moment.
In many cultures, “face” is a big deal. For a world leader, having their outstretched hand rejected in front of cameras could easily be spun as a slight, an insult, or a breach of diplomacy.
Wan Azizah’s Elegant Solution
And yet, Wan Azizah turned what could have been a PR disaster into a beautiful moment.
Instead of leaving Xi’s hand hanging or creating tension, she bowed respectfully and smiled warmly. Her gesture was clear: she wasn’t rejecting Xi personally, but observing her faith.
The result? No awkwardness, no embarrassment. Just grace.
President Xi himself handled it perfectly. Instead of looking taken aback, he nodded in understanding and quickly withdrew his hand — signalling that he respected her choice.
The two then continued on as if nothing had happened, and Wan Azizah later greeted Xi’s wife, Peng Liyuan, warmly — proving she was there as both a principled Muslim and a respectful guest.
A Reflection of Malaysia
In that instant, Wan Azizah showed the world something important about Malaysians: that we can be conservative and religious, while still being diplomatic and cultured. We can hold to our principles without making others feel uncomfortable for being themselves.
And President Xi, by responding calmly, showed his own understanding and appreciation of cultural differences. Together, they turned a potentially tense moment into a display of mutual respect.
Why It Matters
This was more than just a handshake (or lack of one). It was an example of how values and diplomacy can coexist — not through confrontation, but through elegance.
Wan Azizah not only protected her own dignity, but also gave President Xi the chance to show magnanimity, which he did.
It was, simply put, a perfect execution of grace under pressure.
Why Malaysians Loved It
Netizens flooded social media with praise. Some called it a “masterclass in diplomacy,” others said it was the perfect example of how to stick to your principles without offending anyone.
As one user put it: “She bowed respectfully instead of shaking hands. That’s Islam — but done with grace and class.”
More Wan Azizah, Please
If anything, this episode shows that Anwar should bring Wan Azizah with him on more official trips. She embodies the balance Malaysia wants to project to the world: faithful, respectful, and cultured — without ever being apologetic about who we are.
Sometimes, diplomacy isn’t about speeches. Sometimes, it’s about the small gestures that leave the biggest impression.
And Wan Azizah nailed it.
