NILAI August 30, 2026 — They came not to reopen old wounds, but to ensure the scars of history are never forgotten. And as the morning sun rose over the Xiao En Memorial Park on August 30, 2026, the eve of Malaysia's Merdeka Day, they declared a simple, sacred vow: never again.
The annual 9-1 Remembrance Day ceremony jointly organised by New Era University College, XiaoEn Group and the Patriotic Alliance Club brought together representatives from 30 cultural, educational, and historical institutions — including the Lim Lian Geok Foundation, and youth groups such as the Young Malaysians Movement (YMM) .
Together, they bowed before the Malayan Anti-Japanese Monument and the 9-1 Martyrs Memorial Monument.
The Day the Resistance Was Decapitated
September 1, 1942. The date is etched in blood.
On that morning, Japanese imperial forces — acting on intelligence from a traitor within the resistance — ambushed a clandestine strategy meeting of the Malayan People's Anti-Japanese Army (MPAJA) high command at the foothills of Batu Caves. Some 2,000 Japanese troops surrounded the meeting site. Fierce fighting ensued. Eighteen of Malaya's most courageous resistance leaders were killed on the spot .
It was a devastating blow. The MPAJA, which had been formed just months earlier on December 18, 1941, lost its entire pre-war leadership in a single morning . The command structure that had dared to fight back against the imperial forces — a multi-ethnic guerrilla army that tied down more than 70,000 Japanese soldiers and fought over 340 battles — was shattered .
But the spirit of resistance? That could not be killed.
Bridging Wartime Generation and Today's Youth
The ceremony commenced at 10:00 AM. A one-minute silence honored not just the 18 guerrilla commanders, but the thousands of civilian casualties — the innocent lives lost to the Japanese occupation's brutal Sook Ching massacres, which specifically targeted Chinese educators and students for their anti-fascist stance .
Delegations led by chief organizers laid floral wreaths at the base of the monuments, executing three traditional deep bows — *一拜、再拜、三拜* — each bow symbolizing eternal respect, remembrance, and the passing of the torch to posterity.
Then, in a powerful transition from mourning to hope, a flock of peace balloons ascended into the morning sky .
Three human delusions - greed, hatred, and ignorance - cause suffering
Speakers at the ceremony delivered addresses that moved beyond passive grief, focusing instead on active societal lessons.
First, they named the enemy explicitly. The atrocities of World War II were not born from mere territorial ambition — they were birthed by three timeless human vices: greed, hatred, and ignorance. The 18 martyrs did not merely die fighting an occupying army; they died fighting fascism and tyranny — evils that must be actively checked in modern political discourse .
Second, they spoke of unity. Occurring on the eve of Merdeka Day, educators from New Era University College stressed that historical truth is a prerequisite for authentic national unity. In a multi-ethnic society, a shared understanding of historical sacrifices shields the public against contemporary attempts to stoke racial or religious fragmentation .
Third, they transformed mourning into education. The Xiao En Group detailed an ongoing evolution for the Peace Memorial Garden — moving forward, the site will increasingly function as a "living classroom" for Life and Cultural Education. Through academic tours, archival exchanges, and cross-border research into Pacific War history, the site aims to educate younger generations that peace is not an accident of history, but a deliberate, continuous choice .
From Batu Caves to Merdeka
In 2003, a civil coalition spearheaded by the Xiao En Group permanently relocated the1946 historic stone monument near Batu Caves to Nilai.
Datin Choo Lein Sei Keng, Chairman of Xiao En Group, captured the spirit of the occasion in her foreword for the commemorative booklet:
“The 9.1 Remembrance Day was established not only to pay tribute to the heroes but also to plant a seed of values for future generations. Peace is never accidental; it is a gift nurtured through sacrifice, forgiveness, and remembrance. The purpose of building this monument was never to deepen hatred, but to remind us to cherish the heroes' legacy, the value of peace, and the harmony we have today. History is heavy — but what we inherit is not pain, it is conviction.”
