Corporate alumni are former employees of an organization. The term "corporate" is prefaced to recognize the difference from “alumni” who are graduates or former students of universities, colleges or schools. Fostering corporate alumni was recognized as an organizational value by Reid Hoffman, founder of LinkedIn, in his book The Alliance. In 2018 Deloitte recognized in their annual business transformation report that “the employee experience doesn't end at the exit interview.” ('Creating a corporate alumni network' LinkedIn Learning; ‘Why Former Workers Can Be Long-Term Assets’ Capital H Blog 2018)
I support a corporate alumni network is comprised of former employees who actively maintain a connection with former colleagues after their employment ends. A great first step in designing & implementing a corporate alumni network is to define the goals & objectives of the program. Is the main objective to leverage former employees as a viable talent source for open roles? Or simply to build a community of corporate alumni for social get-together activities?
I actively participate in two corporate alumni networks: PETRONAS Alumni & MH (Malaysia Airlines) Friends. However, I have a greater involvement with MH Friends because the Founder & CEO Dr. P. Pathmanaban invited Moses and me to assist him as Administrators for the Whatsapp group. Dynamic Dr. Naban founded this network flatform in 2014 and had organized many interesting activities including MAS alumni grand dinners and MAS book launch.
Our networks are lively because most of MAS retirees have acquired a second or third career. So, we not merely talked about the past but also touch base about the present and future challenges of airline business. To name a few, Dr. Naban seved as Tourism lecturer at Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation and now a certified tour guide focusing on EU market. Moses Devanayagam is Senior Director Operations with the digital airline Air Asia. Susai Anthony Muthu had served MYAirline and currently is the Head of Ground Operations with GallopAir, a new airline company registered in Brunei.
