Perhaps the success of Rempah Noodles lies in its minimalism. The small, laksa-centric menu is well executed, from the flavourful, aromatic broth to its addictive, slurp-worthy broth. Diners at Rempah know the allure of toppings and many demand seconds of the crispy pork lard and beancurd puffs. Due to popular demand, the vibrant Kaya Toast is often sold out. Pillowy and crispy, the Kaya toast is an excellent end to the meal.

Kin Kao—literally meaning ‘eat rice’ in Thai—is ideal for affordable group lunches, with an extensive menu that has something for everyone. Diners are spoilt for choice here: vibrant Thai salads, one-plate rice meals, and soup noodles are just some of the many solid and satisfying offerings. Some of the most popular dishes include the rich Khao Soi with fried chicken and the Mango Sticky Rice.

Tending to Wan Chai’s hungry office workers for 65 years, those in the know flock to Tak Yu Restaurant’s unassuming shop for a delicious array of cha chaan teng staples. The buttery toast with scrambled eggs is elevated here by the addition of 3.6 Hokkaido milk. For something more, indulge in the satay beef bun or signature Indonesian Fried Rice, and wash it down with an Iced Milk Tea.

Hongkongers may have strong opinions on their favourite roast meats in the city, and Kam’s Roast Goose often makes the list. For an indulgent lunch that won’t empty your wallet, try the signature Roast Goose, either served on rice or slippery and lai fun rice noodles. Alternatively, diners can select from a variety of other noodles too. Want more? Pair the roast goose with a different roast meat for a double or triple combo but we recommend the char siu.

Sun Moon Place, a Peking restaurant, takes over the former location of Ship Kee. Classic Peking cuisine, also known as Beijing cuisine, is built on the foundation of powerful and consistent flavours. For lunch, diners have the option of trying the a la carte dim sum menu or the lunch set meal which costs only HKD 78. Options include Shredded Pork Omelette and Diced Chicken with Soya Bean Sauce. For an additional HKD 58, diners get cold dishes like Drunken Chicken or Sliced Pork with Mashed Garlic. The set comes with soup and steamed rice. Meanwhile, dim sum options start at HKD 55 for three pieces of spring rolls or HKD 68 for six pieces of Steamed Pork Dumplings.

As its name suggests, Joy Hing Roasted Meat is an expert when it comes to roasted meat, particularly roast pork. So, it’s not surprising to find a queue outside the humble restaurant. After all, Joy Hing’s history dates back to the 1800s as a family-run restaurant in Guangdong before setting foot in Hong Kong. The dishes here are not just loved for their taste but also for their price. It’s not just the favourite of Hong Kong’s top chefs but even the late Anthony Bourdain.

Sample the flavours of Singaporean cuisine courtesy of JOM. This modern Singaporean eatery serves local favourites and traditional cuisine with a contemporary twist. Its name means ‘Come, let’s go!’ in Malay which signifies the memories of the founder when eating at local hawker stands in Singapore. The weekday lunch menu here starts at HKD 98 and includes a main dish, snacks (for an additional price), and a drink. If you order takeaway, you’ll even get 15 per cent off. Choices include the famous Hainanese Chicken, the ever-so-flavourful Nasi Lemak, the hearty Prawn Mee, and more.

In a list of lunch spots in Wan Chai, Samsen is one of the top places that came to mind for us. Located next to the iconic Blue House, Samsen attracts some hour-long lunch lines on certain days. But that doesn’t deter its most dedicated diners to secure a spot—no reservations allowed. We’ve already raved about the Wagyu Boat Noodles and Crabmeat Fried Rice; washing those down with Thai Iced Tea. All this makes Samsen a perfect place for a delicious summer lunch.

With a larger space, there’s no excuse not to dine at Ship Kee. The Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurant continues to offer dishes that pay tribute to China’s remarkable seafaring culture. While its new spacious dining area is amazing for big gatherings, that’s not to say that it’s not a great lunch spot. They have a dim sum menu available on top of set lunch options. The dim sum offerings are on a lower range but if you’re dining with four or six people, go for the lunch set. You’ll get soup, three or four choices of dim sum, choices of main dishes, rice, and noodles. Vegetarian options are available as well.

Want to spice up your lunch? Look no further than Bengal Brothers. This boozy canteen-like eatery offers regional Indian street food and other snacks. It’s a great place for lunch given the affordable prices. Dig into small plates filled with flavour like the Papri Chaat or the Kachumber Salad. An absolute must is the famous Kathi Roll, wrapped in a flaky paratha with tangy chutney and onions. If you have room for more, we also recommend the canteen-style Thali, an Indian-style meal that comes with daal, sabzi, kachumber salad, and raita. You can choose rice or paratha and enjoy free refills of the side dishes. It might be too early for some booze but Bengal Brothers also offers refreshing non-alcoholic cold drinks like Mango Lassi and Indian Lemon Soda.
