The best news that is now the talk of the town is that Najib Razak’s final bid to set aside his conviction and sentence for corruption in the SRC International case will proceed next month at the Federal Court, as fixed previously in May 2022.
Earlier this week Najib dismissed Messrs Shafee & Co from representing him in the Apex court for his SRC appeal. Local press reported that Najib has appointed lawyer Hisyam Teh Poh Teik from Messrs Hisyam as his lead counsel, and Messrs Zaid Ibrahim Suflan, TH Liew & Partners’ partners Liew Teck Huat and Rueben Mathiavaranam as his new solicitors.
However, Najib qualified that this legal firm is appointed only for the final appeal in the Federal Court but Messrs Shafee & Co is still his solicitors for all other cases.
The newly appointed lawyers immediately filed for a delay on grounds that they needed more time to study the voluminous files.
Many suspected that the last-minute switch of legal teams was a delaying tactic by Najib. This ploy has been lampooned on social media by Fahmi Reza and Cartoonist Zunar. Their excellent portrayals are included below.
In any case, this last Friday night of July, the Federal Court is the toast of the town. The people are delighted with the decision by the Federal Court to proceed without further delay on August 15 to deliberate on the final verdict over Najib that has dragged on for years.
Everyone is hoping and praying, whatever the outcome might be, that the case will bring to an end one of the many corruption charges against Najib described by the Court of Appeal judge last year, as a “National Embarrassment”.
However in the midst of the merriment at a bar in Bangsar this night somebody circulated a note that appeared on the Facebook of Zahid Ibrahim the soon-to-be defender of the former PM who was once the fiercest critic of Najib which stated that his newfound client might not be guilty of the crimes, after all!
His note says, “Now, I am convinced Najib was lied to. Not only by Jho Low but also by his officers. He was misled by his officers in 1MDB and lied to by Goldman Sachs and Aabar Investments in Abu Dhabi.
“So the loss of billions of ringgit, in my opinion, was not because of Najib’s fault or in other words, he was not the one who planned it.” (Zaid Ibrahim’s FB page)
That really put a damper on the evening’s celebration which started out very well early in the evening.
However, when the note had gone completely around the bar, one lone voice shouted, in a muffled tone “Good luck Zaid!”.
In any case, everyone agreed we’ll have to wait and see what August brings as the beers flowed freely at that bar in Bangsar, Zaid and Najib were quickly forgotten and conversations turned instead to prices of eggs and the war in Europe.
