Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat recently retired as the 10th Chief Justice of Malaysia recently. Tun Tengku Maimun has courageously demonstrated true commitment to justice as upheld by our constitution throughout her tenure. She steered the judiciary through multiple challenges such as the Covid-19 pandemic, attacks against judges carrying out their duties in high-profile cases and criminal trials involving politicians. As such, she has left a big imprint in our hearts as Malaysians. To Tengku Maimun, we say, “Thank you” and wish you a good retirement.
Following her retirement, Chief Judge of MalayaTan Sri Hasnah Mohammed Hashim has assumed the role and is carrying out the duties of Chief Justice. Our eyes are now focused on who our 11th Chief Justice will be.
I believe Tengku Maimun’s legacy of upholding justice is just the beginning of something greater, something better to come if all of us hold on to truth, justice and righteousness without wavering. It is an awakening to those in the judiciary as well as to the man in the street.
For those in the judiciary and all students of the law, this is a clear demonstration and reminder of what is expected of you as you pursue this direction – to faithfully discharge your duties in your office to the best of your ability, bear true allegiance to Malaysia, and preserve, protect and defend its constitution. Indeed, it is a great responsibility as the hopes of all for justice in minor or major cases are in your hands. That means that as men and women in our judiciary willingly take on this oath, they are prepared to face all kinds of temptations, threats or challenges with due diligence in their course of actions to uphold justice.
As an ordinary rakyat, I pray that this new light in our judiciary will become brighter and stronger. I believe that regardless of race or creed, there are still pockets of God-fearing men and women who will take the baton of justice to protect and defend the constitution of Malaysia. May each of them arise to take their positions with the fear of God and the love for Malaysia in their hearts.
So, what must the ordinary rakyat do? Never give up in your hope for a better Malaysia. It is very easy to be sucked by negative situations that seem to outweigh everything else. However, let us courageously and without wavering, choose to look at the many positive situations and speak blessings into this land. Indeed, Malaysia is a good land, a blessed land in many aspects.
God bless Malaysia!
