22-year-old Nur Irdina Huri is one of the students from UPSI who was on the bus that crashed and overturned in Hulu Perak early this morning (June 9). She survived and had the opportunity to describe what it was like moments before the accident took place.
The bus driver was allegedly speeding on the hilly and dark road, causing the vehicle to move unsteadily.
Irdina said she was not asleep before the accident, which happened at the speed of light. She also shared how she managed to cheat death this time and highlighted her regret of not being able to save many of her peers.
“I escaped from the bus through the a small hole. I couldn’t save my friends who were trapped in the accident. It was too dark for me to see anything.”
Irdina, who is pursuing her studies in Early Childhood Education, suffered injuries to her waist and sprained her ankle, reported Harian Metro.
In another update, UPSI Vice Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr. Md Amin Md Taff said the university has assigned a staff member to assist each family of the students involved in the tragic accident.
“We are providing various assistance, including accommodation for the victims’ families. We will help them in other areas, in any way we can.”
The victims’ next of kin will receive financial assistance
In the meantime, the Ministry of Higher Education (KPT) will distribute initial assistance of RM2,000 and disaster assistance of RM1,000 to the next of kin of the victims involved. Its Minister, Datuk Seri Dr. Zambry Abd Kadir, said the initial assistance was aimed at easing the burden on the next of kin, including carrying out the funeral arrangements for the remains of the students who died in the accident, reported Sinar Harian.
The bus, which was headed from Terengganu to the university, was carrying 42 UPSI students before colliding with a Perodua Alza in a freak accident that took place around 1 AM.
