The recent spate of attacks on KK Mart outlets, culminating in the third firebombing, has sent shockwaves through Sarawak.
The attacks, believed to be in retaliation for the "Allah" socks issue, have sparked concerns from two Sarawak MPs, highlighting the need to protect the state's model of racial and religious unity and harmony.
Julau MP Datuk Larry Sng expressed disbelief at the attacks, emphasising that Sarawak is admired for its exemplary race relations and religious harmony. He urged the public to avoid vigilantism and violence, emphasising that disagreements should be resolved peacefully, without causing harm or damage to property.
Dr. Kelvin Yii, Bandar Kuching MP, echoed Sng's sentiments, emphasising the need for Sarawakians to stand against hate and prevent its normalization. He highlighted the fragile nature of Malaysia's unity and harmony, stressing the importance of protecting these values.
Both MPs emphasised the importance of letting the law take its course and called for unity and understanding among Malaysians. They stressed the need to de-escalate the situation and work towards building a better understanding of one another, regardless of race, religion, or background.
The attacks on KK Mart one in Bidor and another in Kuanta earlier, are a stark reminder of the dangers of inflammatory rhetoric and the need for responsible discourse.
The masses are easily stirred by emotional rhetoric. Their tendency is to respond by means available to them. Bottles and kerosene, or Molotov cocktail may be easily put together. But the danger of it spreading is great unless these evil acts are nipped in the bud.
It is imperative that we reject hate and violence and instead strive for peace, harmony, and mutual respect. Let us use this moment as an opportunity to strengthen our unity and ensure that such incidents do not happen again.
