the devil wears prada most iconic lines

Gen Z is saying 2026 is the new 2016, or honestly, more like 2006. With The Devil Wears Prada 2 hitting the big screen on April 30, 2026, it’s kind of wild to think the cult classic is turning 20. That said, the movie has aged just as gracefully as its cast. For some fans, every line is still fresh in their minds, while for others, it’s a bit of a blur. Either way, it’s always fun to look back at the most iconic lines from The Devil Wears Prada. Yes, of course Miranda Priestly (played by Meryl Streep) has numerous iconic lines throughout the movie but the rest of the cast doesn’t fall short either. And while we (read: me) aren’t sure if the sequel will live up to the first, this is already a major pop culture moment for the year, and we’re fully invested.

Look back at the most iconic lines from The Devil Wears Prada

“By all means, move at a glacial pace. You know how that thrills me.” – Miranda Priestly

Miranda is full of ice cold sarcasm and even Meryl Streep herself couldn’t help but love this line. Andy Sachs clearly struggles to keep up with the fast pace of the Runway magazine but this exact scene doesn’t take place in the office. It’s when Andy drops by Miranda’s house after work and Andy fumbles around to find a particular seating chart for a luncheon. While Miranda herself looks torn down by her personal matters, her sass never stops.

“All right everyone! Gird your loins.” – Nigel Kipling

Nigel Kipling is one of the most loved characters of the movie, and this particular line is said early on in the film to signal everyone in the office that Miranda is on her way. It’s Andy’s first day at work and the whole office spirals as they prepare for Miranda to come in to the office. There are people putting away papers and magazines, women changing from sneakers to high heels, and you get the drill.

“Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking.” – Miranda Priestly

The team sits down to discuss the coming cover issues and when it comes to April, one staff suggests that there are ‘a lot of florals right now’. Instead of simply saying ‘no’, Miranda of course injects her signature sarcasm with this iconic line.

“Details of your incompetence do not interest me.” – Miranda Priestly

This is also said early on the film, right after Miranda marks her first presence in the film. Emily runs over to her as soon as she enters and she immediately puts Emily down, implying Emily is inefficient, and it also perfectly shows the demanding nature of Miranda.

“You sold your soul to the devil when put on your first pair of Jimmy Choo’s, I saw it.” – Emily Charlton

Emily delivers this line while she’s lying on her hospital bed after being hit by a car (distracted while retrieving Hermès scarves). Emily had been prepping all year to go to Paris Fashion Week with Miranda, only to later realise Miranda had decided to take Andy instead. The line is her dramatic, fashion-forward way of accusing Andy of betraying her to climb the career ladder.

“I love my job. I love my job. I love my job.” – Emily Charlton

Ah, the line, the mantra of all overworked millennials. While Emily preps Andy for her orientation at the magazine, she’s also visibly stressed with a cold but she repeatedly says ‘I love my job’, to keep her composure whilst sniffing her nose.

“I don’t eat anything, and when I feel like I’m about to faint, I eat a cube of cheese.” – Emily Charlton

During a Runway magazine party, Andy sees Emily at the event and compliments her, saying, “You look so thin.” Emily, clearly pleased by the comment, explains her extreme pre-Paris diet regimen.

“Let me know when your whole life goes up in smoke. That means it’s time for a promotion.” – Nigel Kipling

Andy is overwhelmed and admits to Nigel that her personal life is ‘hanging by a thread’ after she misses her boyfriend Nate’s birthday due to work demands. And when Nigel delivers this line, he isn’t being cruel, he’s delivering a brutally honest reality check. He’s explaining that sacrificing your personal life is practically a rite of passage when you’re climbing the ladder at Runway.

“Okay. Can you please spell Gabbana?” — Andy Sachs

On her very first day at the job, Andy is already thrown right in to being Miranda’s assistant. Andy is answering phones at her desk when a caller asks to leave a message for Miranda. The caller mentions a name, ‘Gabbana’, and Andy, who is completely new to the fashion world and still learning the ropes, politely asks, ‘Okay. Can you please spell ‘Gabbana’?’. To which the caller hangs up immediately.

“That’s all.” – Miranda Priestly

Unlike her other iconic lines, Miranda’s signature ‘That’s all’ is not tied to one specific scene, it’s a recurring catchphrase she uses throughout the film to end conversations on her terms. This phrase also perfectly encapsulates her authority, with just two simple words but excellent delivery.

Ahead of the sequeal, many (like myself) will probably give the cult classic a rewatch, or you can also tune in to our recap here. And watch the trailer for the new movie to get yourself prepped.
