The Doomsday Countdown Club: 2,760 Weekends Left, But Who's Counting?

There's a peculiar strain of Malaysian uncle wisdom that shows up in your WhatsApp on an early Friday morning, wrapped in the gentle menace of a "Wallaahualam" and signed off with "SORAK!!!" — as if impending Armageddon were something to be cheered on like a rugby try.
My friend's message has done the maths for us: 53 years to Doomsday, or 2,760 weekends, give or take a leap year and whatever mercy the Almighty extends to those of us who still haven't finished paying off the car. There's something almost comforting about a man who can calculate the End of Days with the same casual precision most of us reserve for calculating how many public holidays are left before Raya.
The theology here — that time itself is contracting as Doomsday approaches, each week zipping past faster than the last — is not new. It's been circulating in mosque WhatsApp groups since the invention of WhatsApp groups. But there's a certain genius in pairing eschatology with a countdown clock better suited to a Black Friday sale. "Only 2,760 weekends left — act now!" One almost expects a promo code.
And yet, buried under the cosmic dread, there's real tenderness in the closing line: Don't Worry, Be Happy. Which is, when you think about it, the most Malaysian response imaginable to the end of the world — acknowledge the abyss, then go enjoy your weekend anyway, preferably with good company and better food. The apocalypse can wait; the nasi lemak stall closes at eleven.
So here's to the 2,760 weekends ahead of us, however many actually remain. May we spend them arguing about politics, forwarding dubious countdown calculations to each other, and reminding one another — with more sincerity than the doom implies — that we love each other. SORAK indeed.

It seems like last week's Friday was just only yesterday upon us and yet here we are 7 days on that we find ourselves at the end of another week and ready to enjoy another weekend.
It is said that as Doomsday is nearer, the days, weeks, months and years feel like they are becoming shorter in time.
By my reckoning it will be 53 more years for Doomsday to come. Wallaahualam.
So get ready for another weekend in the countdown of 2,760 weekends to Doomsday.
