The earth came crashing down: Batang Kali landslide victims recount horror

KUALA LUMPUR – It was meant to be a fun-filled camping trip at the Father’s Organic Farm campsite in Batang Kali.

However, for Leong Jim Meng, 57, and her family, the outing turned out to be a horrifying experience when the earth suddenly came crashing down on them.

Leong said they were asleep when they heard a loud bang about 2am this morning, trapping the family as the soil covered their tent.

“We managed to crawl out and escape to a nearby car park when we heard a second landslide. I alerted the authorities and they were at the scene within 30 minutes,” said Leong, adding that they were lucky to have escaped unhurt.

Camping at Zone B of the hilltop side, another victim, Teh Lynn Xuan, 22, said there were more than 40 people in the zone when the incident occurred.

Teh lost a brother in the landslide, while another has since been hospitalised.

“There were even toddlers and babies who died in the incident. It was so scary and happened so fast,” she said.

Another victim, who works at the Father’s Organic Farm campsite, said she and her friends managed to escape the landslide.

However, she said one of her 13 friends was hospitalised due to a leg injury while the rest of them escaped unhurt.

“It was really scary and all of us are still traumatised,” she said. – The Vibes, December 16, 2022
