July is a stacked month in the world of film, thanks to several acclaimed comedies and a brand new blockbuster from box office master Christopher Nolan, which looks set to be his biggest movie yet.
The next few weeks offer up a variety of genres for those wishing to venture to the cinema – from big-budget releases to smaller indie fare – but films don’t come more important than Life Support, a groundbreaking new documentary about doctors who have been working on the frontlines in Gaza since October 2023.
Footage presented in Daniele Rugo’s film will chill you to the bone, as the cameras follow medics dealing with dwindling supplies, which are being denied entry to bombed-out hospitals, all while dealing with a constant flow of casualties.
Life Support is a challenging must-watch produced by actors Susan Sarandon and Melissa Barrera, musician Paul Weller, and Oscar-nominated and Bafta-winning filmmakers Farah Nabulsi and Asif Kapadia. The film is released on 10 July.
Arriving on 17 July is Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, which needs no introduction, but here’s one anyway: it’s the filmmaker’s first movie since the Best Picture-winning Oppenheimer was released in 2023, and it’s an adaptation of Homer’s Greek epic starring Matt Damon as Odysseus.
It boasts one of the biggest ensemble casts of the year – Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Lupita N’yongo and an apparently scene-stealing Samantha Morton – and is the director’s first film to be shot entirely in IMAX.
Just a few weeks after The Odyssey, Holland and Zendaya will be swinging onto screens once again for a fourth Spider-Man film, titled Brand New Day.
The sequel is set in the immediate aftermath 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home and will have the task of setting things in motion ahead of forthcoming blockbuster Avengers: Doomsday, which will be released in December.
There’s also Canadian cult comedy Nirvanna: The Band – The Show – The Movie and Olivia Wilde’s The Invite. Both, which put forward their own unique brand of humour, received rapturous responses in the US upon their respective festival premieres.
